The responses to the concerns about Spoutible’s content policy are evenly split between “OBVIOUSLY romance authors aren’t in violation, quit being hysterical” and “We don’t want smut-peddlers here, get your own app!” The policy is so vague even its defenders can’t agree on what it means.

Why who gets to decide what is or isn’t porn should be something that we openly discuss, particularly in the writing community:

This is why I remain concerned. From trusted news source Judd Legum’s Popular Information: a book w LGBTQ characters is labeled “porn” in FL. “Who on Spoutible decides what is porn?” is a valid Q, because if it’s Ron DiSantis, or someone(s) Ron-adjacent, that a big problem.

Oh yes, it's all a great conspiracy and not *checks notes* actual authors concerned about if their social media will get banned because of the work they do, or *checks notes* actual lawyers concerned about if we can't talk about sexual harassment.

Whatever you think of adult content on this site directly, this is not good language, it’s not good policy, and it is extremely fixable. @cbouzy I am happy to help try to come up with a policy that provides clear guidance, meets general aims of external bodies, while preserving necessary discussion.

Supposed liberals asking why the TOS language is an issue: MeToo isn't over, queer bodies and lifestyles are being attacked on the merits of parts parts daily, media that contains an iota of intimacy, including network TV shows, romance novels, and even YA books focusing on bodies, are bannable.

Given what I’m seeing on here about romance and discussions of sex and queer content, maybe now’s a good time to remember that you CAN curate your experience by not following someone whose content you dislike?

So… doesn’t this apply to links to TV series & movies, too? My film OUT OF BODY (a gay paranormal romcom) has a love scene filmed w lots of gauze/romantic lighting. My TV series (MarriageOfInconvenience, on Dekkoo 4/6/23!!) has a gritty bathroom hookup. Neither are unusual for movies/TV. ? @cbouzy ?
Courtney Milan @courtneymilan
Just to be clear: I’m pretty sure that posting links to romance novels that contain sex scenes violates this policy.

And like, this: “Exceptions may be made for medical, health, educational or artistic content.”

Is not good language. The proper language starts with “nothing in this policy prevents discussion of ___” and the list has to be longer.

Literally a response to someone who reviews books in the New York Times. That’s where we are with this policy.

It would be nice to be able to post links to a New York Times book review of a romance novel.

I’m sorry you feel this is a place to discuss issues related to your “work” that some of us who prefer to keep our phones and devices family friendly find unsafe. I’m a first waver who voted against porn on this site. My grandchildren often play with my phone. Nothing personal to you or anyone.

I just finished #Saturnalia by #StephanieFeldman . I went in expecting a horror novel, which it is: the horror of a near-future that springs DIRECTLY from everything that's wrong with our present. A great read, but anger-inducing in a good way.

Black science fiction: we’re soaking in it.
In some ways, we’re living in the genre, and by we I mean all of us.

I had some big unruly thoughts about how this rising tide of AI is born out of our fetishization of THE IDEA, and how this also ties into puritanical thinking and fascism and -- well. Anyway. Give a read if you like.

I am well into #Saturnalia by #StephanieFeldman and I am VERY into it. While the mystery at the heart of the main plot is meant to be creepy, it's the backdrop of a near-future in the throes of capitalism-induced collapse that's the real horror here.

While it always depends on whether or not the writer can execute the character well, I do tend to agree that it's lovely seeing more "Cantankerous, sexually perverse, too-smart-for-her-historical-situation, possibly corrupt" women in stories.

I've just finished reading Vol. 4 of Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation and I am DEVASTATED. My heart is in PIECES. Good thing the final volume's out in May because idk if I could stand waiting much longer than that to see how this all ends.

This reminds me of the current travails we're experiencing right now when it comes to agriculture. It wasn't long ago, after all, that a local bride went viral for having an "onion bouquet" because the price of onions has gotten so ridiculously high they're considered luxury goods.

Still reading Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation Vol. 4 and after I am done with this I think I'm going to read a horror novel or something. Just: something a little less likely to make me want to scream over the repeated emotional damage.
