Hey I know we're all cool on #Spoutible , but please be careful with abelism and prudish behavior. These are both easy to fall into, *especially* anti-sex stuff. There will be sex workers and kinksters here. Don't be hostile to people you don't understand. If you can't handle it, block and move on.

In response to Inconclusive Laura®️.
You are correct! It's Elizabeth Cotten. She was born around 1893, when opportunities for women, especially Black women, were slim. She tried to pursue a music career when she was younger but married at 15 and had a family. Her church counseled her to give up her "worldly" guitar music dreams.

Yes. Absolutely. Just call it eye maintenance, or brain warm-up, mental pre-preparedness, thought collection analysis, inner creative process assessment... You're doing very important work. 😉

Any mom or dad out there that is feeling bad about their parenting should just watch #Succession . Instant improvement by comparison.

One of my biggest fears in life, potentially something I'd call a phobia, is being wrongfully convicted of something. People who find out often say things like, "well if you're not doing anything wrong..." and then I try to explain how it happens all the time to people who never thought it'd be them

#scientificwriting tip: Feeling overwhelmed & lost in the vastness of your project can cause writer's block. If you're blocked, break the writing process into a series of small, discrete tasks & finish at least one task a day. Aim for steady progress in small increments. #research #writing

We are currently all-in on potty training our toddler. Personally I would LOVE for a rage comedian (like Lewis Black) or someone with an epic yell (like Gene Hackman in his prime) to make a potty training workshop, because I'm convinced that every workshop that tells you to "keep cool" is lying 😡

Biden, closing: “The state of the Union is strong!”

(Thanks to you, Mr. President). And thank you all for following along with my first live spout. Feels great to produce content for likeminded people. Glad to have this site, and glad for you all. #SOTU

Back from giving my hands a little break after all that live spouting! In post-SOTU commentary, Biden very artfully addressed and reassured Americans (and the world) on the many issues we are facing. Few could have delivered as impassioned a message as Biden. That’s his super power. Passion. #SOTU

PBS is the best place to watch as they just play the speech with no commentary.

I already had to turn off the ABC feed of the #SOTU because they were undermining Biden at every turn. Fingers crossed CBS is somewhat better. 🤞

Our local candy shop is out of grapefruit gummies, and I'm rather bummed. Gonna have to make due with some sour patch kids or something.

What's your favorite non-chocolate candy?

So I'm going to try sharing more of my life than I ever felt safe to do on that other platform. I've decided to talk about my mom and her impending death. We don't talk about dying and I think we need to. I promise to also share the funny parts as well as the sad parts.

I'm not just spouting off about my mom's impending death and my mission to get us talking about dying here. I'm doing it IRL too. The first response I get is Sorry!. The second is I don't know what to say. Understandable. Our culture encourages us to avoid the subject. It's time to change that.

Needed help getting out of a writing rut so I thought about what I tell my students: Make it personal. And I remembered that the writing that's moved me the most is personal. I mean, f*ck patriarchal nonsense about scholarship being all head & no heart. Writing from the heart today. It feels good.

The rush to quote-unquote AI-run programs is so blatantly a cash grab - an attempt to steal the identities and labor of an underclass. People have yet to provide a positive use of these AI programs *except* saving a business a ton of money, or to avoid paying someone for their work.

You know when a waiter quietly recommends you NOT order the fish today? A.I. waiters aren't gonna do that. They're ultimately programmed to serve the company, not us. They won't bend the rules the way an actual human might. It's gonna make things worse.
