In response to Sandra de Helen.
It is a GenX joke about how much they're ignored. My GenX friend shared it with me. One meme after another just plumb leaves them out.

My FB poem about being in Las Vegas during the last game of the 2016 NBA Championship when Cavs came back from 0-3 to win. I wore my LeBron #23 jersey that night among hordes of dazed Golden State fans.

While known for his wholesome illustrations, after The Mississippi Burning case, he painted this in 1965 along with other paintings regarding civil rights. We got to see this at a Rockwell exhibit in Nashville. Just a gut punch. Also Nina Simone wrote "Mississippi Goddamn" about these brutal murders

There are no "humble brags" on Spoutible. We do "Legit Pride" here. Congratulations, this is a helluva achievement.
Jeanne Gustafson @JeanneGustafson
Tiny humble brag because I'm legitimately thrilled about being able to exercise properly again (finally--suck it, long covid), and also, if you're trying to get into a jogging routine, I recommend the just run app. Simple to use and no ads or anything weird.

Dear sweet Angela:
You are not the reason. Bigots are the reason.
Hate is the reason.
Don't internalize guilt over being a victim. Rape happens because of rapists.
Terrorizing LGBTQ people happens because of villains.
You are loved here.
If your mom's church is breaking off, you're loved there.
Angela @LumpySpaceAngela
My mom told me their church and several others will break off from the denomination over the decision to condemn LGBTQ+. I know it's not my fault but I can't help feeling guilty about being the reason they are in this pickle. (And yes the blame really belongs to men who gatekeep God.)

Peanut butter bonbons, one of my Christmas traditions. I only make them when no one else is around, because the noise from tapping the fork on the side of the pan to drain the excess chocolate is maddening. Tinktinktink for hours!

I went on a cruise and when you ordered a tea or coffee from the coffee bar you could pick one of these sweets to go with it. 🥰

George V dessert from the now-closed Payard @ Caesar's Palace, clone of the best patisserie in France. The waiter confessed that he occasionally smudged one with a thumbprint so he could eat it, since the chef only allowed perfection to be served.

PS. This thread was fueled in part by the deep dive @ryan made into analyzing the Wired article & noting what % of the text was devoted to which topics. It made it very clear what WASN'T being noticed or covered.

And because I wrote this on the fly, I neglected to mention the AAPI communities & others that also value collective responsibility. Please forgive typos that weren't noticed til too late.

I follow classic films by @albertopastor , black films by @jforwardfilms , @blackmusicproject for deep analysis. This is a rich & artful place that mostly soothes me, despite bringing me wrenching political news. It makes me believe I can make a difference. And that matters most.

It reminds me mostly of my #BuyNothing group, where daily acts of generosity among diverse neighbors power a sense of community. I look at #DailyPictureTheme before I sign off at night, marveling at lovely images people share. I dance to #SpoutingClassics . These are places hosted by WM who get it.

I am deeply grateful for the people who are banding together to keep it safe, make it a large family BBQ where we don't have to sing Kumbaya together but truly thoughtless or nasty behavior will be called out or put in check. I honestly don't know if the mostly WM tech media can make sense of this.

Spoutible is a New Place. It isn't Utopia, but it is something extraordinary that is being built: a diverse space where voices can be heard, people can learn from each other. Stories are being told. And stories are what knit us together.

But it is no Mayberry. People will get called out by problematic behavior, our trans friends will be defended, foljs will tell wyt folks to talk less & listen more. It isn't for everybody. And it is cold water in the face of the privileged who expect to be centered & cosseted like everywhere else.

As it has evolved by its users, who have to create our own algorithms, Spoutible behaves more and more like an Intentional Community with a Gift Economy. It mostly runs on good will, compliments, shared good wishes, info exchange, and a "here's a pie I made, have a piece" neighborly attitude.

@Cbouzy also made the **safety**of marginalized communities central to the development & mission of Spoutible. This was virtually unmentioned in the Wired article, just like the considerations of the marginalized are ignored or mocked or totally misunderstood daily by the many WM who dominate tech.

A #sweet , authentic connect I had with my stepdaughter Robin when she helped my granddaughter Sarah create her 8th grade family collage & she used this pic. A badass 7 year old & her Mimi sporting matching tats at the Polynesian Cultural Center. I felt so...understood.

My granddaughter Sarah on a camel in the Sahara during her junior term in Morocco. I'm so grateful she was able to be immersed in another culture, pursuing gender studies, just before the pandemic shut everything down. And we got to visit her in Fes.

Sunday I was driving down Kinsman & saw a couple of fabulous vintage Oldsmobiles driven by fly black men, & I haven't seen such beautiful #cars with beautiful men in a decade, much less 2 a minute apart. This isn't a patch on what I saw, but it's the closest I could find. #Cleveland
