Indeed...mostly, that acceptable quotient tends to be determined by overall usefulness. You stop being useful, you stop being worth caring about. When that child reaches a certain age, men of his type stop caring so much.

I read this too, the one thing I noticed was that whilst he may be accepting of his grandchild, there was no mention that he was now accepting of his son-in-law.
