Wednesday micro-story challenge: in 300 characters or less, write a story (fiction or non; it could even be a poem) about...a perception shift.

Shoeboxes stacked quiet and orderly as her mother life, each shoe wrapped in tissue. Goodwill could have them. The last box slipped from her hands, spilling out the empty gin pint filled with flower petals, the photographs of her teen mother in the lap of a man she never knew, his hand on her knee.

I have to admit being a woman requires a specific set of skills.
Even as I write this down I'm playing with my granddaughter, drawing, watching yin yang master on Netflix with subtitles, texting my friend, figuring out what to pack for my vacation. Can I fit a Perception shift in there?
Why not.

Here I stand on pointed toes
I try to write but nothing flows
I shake my head to clear my thoughts
And all that falls are inky blots.

The thing is, it made sense at the time. A few long hauls, and the money was easy.

Took a while, sure, there and back and round again.

But the money.

Then an engine went somewhere between Alpha 1 and Beta Prime 8 and I'm adrift among the stars, the end before the end, nothing left but space.

2 well-known & respected pastors with Sunday services broadcast on TV in our city were closeted atheists. Both had degrees in Sociology and felt the best way to help the maximum number of people was through the ministry.

Ooh, I love it! Maybe religion isn't really about god anyway, but about how we treat each other.

I'm a smug 15 in 1965, assuming abortion is something I should be against.
Then I overhear Mom & Grandma Stella in conversation.
Grandma: I'm lucky to have my 3 children spaced so nicely.
Mom, born in 1926: That wasn't luck, that was your abortions.
Grandma: (shrugs) That's what we had.
BOOM!

Roger and Claude were roommates at Harvard, two freshman Math majors. Roger's people went back to the Mayflower, while Claude was Haitian and on a scholarship. Roger challenged Claude to play chess, thinking he'd easily beat a black man. Never. Not once. Roger became a scholar of Race Relations.

Yes! A real eye-opening experience that makes someone rethink their prejudices.
