I’m going to use this to highlight the three types of people on social media in my opinion : (quick little thread)

1) Content Creators - these are the folks who make videos, posts, threads to educate, entertain, inform. They are generally looking to HAVE an audience and crave metrics & clicks

2) Consumers - this is the vast majority of people with SM accounts. They read posts, watch videos, etc. They check in to see what OTHERS have to say rather than to say something themselves. They may join in sometimes. They are necessary.

(This is where the “we need more blue checks people are”)

3) Users - these are the majority of people currently on Spoutible - they aren’t making content for their own benefit. They aren’t here to be a passive consumer. They are here for the SOCIAL part of social media - friendships, support, learning, joking, etc. These are daily power users.

Do you have to have the first group to have a success? Are the people in the second group who proclaim they know what is required for success correct?
Of course not - this industry will not look the same in one year as it did five years ago.

Folks like this guy only measure success in one way: is it Twitter? Is it the same thing or better?

It’s the American looking for McDonalds in Paris thing.

Social media will be self segregated by interests and values. Twitter and Facebook were anomalies of growth and cultural impact

They are also dying platforms

This guy thinks he has the formula for success

He doesn’t

But here is my main thoughts on how to make it a success:

If you own a restaurant and your target market is “everyone who needs to eat” you will fail

If you own a clothing store and it’s “everyone who wears clothes” you will fail

If it’s a social media site and it’s “everyone who was a Twitter user” it will fail if that’s your target for success

We don’t need every person who exists online to be here to be a success. We need to be patient, grow a community and then support business and organizations that join us here because they share our values.

We don’t need everyone. We don’t need it to be twitter.

(Clarification: Users (group 3) create content, the consume content, they eat up everything that happens because they make up the DNA of the site)

To conclude: this guy is mostly a Consumer (we know this from his complaint) and that’s OK. That’s what he needs.

Consumers aren’t going to find what they need right now. It’s like moving into a home under construction and complaining there is no roof.

Yeah, we get it. There should be a roof

But people will come and people will go

And as long as Chris keeps paying the server bill (which we can help with) we will keep being here and weaving the fabric of the site.

It’s not going to be Twitter. It’s not going to be Facebook.

It will be something different. Better.

Ours.
