The purpose of minimum wage was to ensure workers made a living wage - based on COL in much of the US $50k isn't a living wage, it should be higher.

It should be but was designed so people could have a minimal standard of living. I was making minimum wage in 1968 driving a combine on my stepfathers farm. Not sure how anyone could live on that. But a $50K minimum wage would be insane.
