What a monstrous thing to do! Hat check tips?
Linda Eisenstein @LindaEisenstein
I have started to carry more cash on me - for tips. That way I know it will go in the server's pocket. I remember when columnist Connie Schultz became famous, pre-Internet, by breaking a story about a fancy restaurants keeping all the hat check girls' tips.

Oh yes. It created a firestorm in the Cleveland restaurant industry when women revealed how often wage theft happened. I believe she won the Pulitzer shortly afterward.

As a teen, my older son worked at a buffet restaurant. He was classified as a server, even tho just refilled drinks, got condiments, etc. The manager, as it turned out, was keeping all the electronic tips for himself. He got fired, but a couple of managers later it happened again.

A cash tip is better for the servers' income tax.
