This is a fossil brittlestar, Onychaster flexilis, from the Mississippian aged Edwardsville Formation near Crawfordsville, Indiana. The long arms are curled under to protect itself when a mudflow or storm buried it.

Oh my gosh I live only 30 minutes from Crawfordsville. My grandkids hunt for crinoids all the time at the creek behind my house. For the 100th day of school my granddaughter found 100 crinoids. It only took her a couple of hours.

I've collected there a few times and had really great luck. I have quite a few pieces I'm still working to prepare. Crinoids are my favorite.

This is my painting of the same Onychaster flexilis brittlestar climbing a crinoid stem. They are often found tangled in the calyx of crinoids stealing food.
