This is a fossil brittlestar, Onychaster flexilis, from the Mississippian aged Edwardsville Formation near Crawfordsville, Indiana. The long arms are curled under to protect itself when a mudflow or storm buried it.

This is my painting of the same Onychaster flexilis brittlestar climbing a crinoid stem. They are often found tangled in the calyx of crinoids stealing food.
