One of the downsides of social media is discovering people you used to admire have garbage beliefs and are people with whom you wouldn't want to be in the same room.

Not really a downside to me. If you’re gonna have garbage beliefs let me know up front so I know to avoid you like the plague lol. It does suck when you don’t find out until way later though

It can be handy, however, when seeking closer partnerships and/or business relationships. I've gone to SM to vet businesses for signs of their political support; if they're "on the wrong side of history", I'll use a different vendor if possible.

Literally the reason I stopped using Facebook. I was starting to hate people I want to like.

Yes. I’m retired now, but kept several friends from work on FB to not lose touch. I discovered through their posts three support the Conservatives. Ugh.

*Also applies to class reunions, family holiday gatherings, and work BBQs when some beers have been consumed

So true. And if they're artists or musicians or writers, it's spoiled your enjoyment of their work forever. Sigh...

A former neighbor who I liked starting posting about Trump on Facebook. I gave my opposing view and after a few spats I dropped her from my friends list. She moved away which worked out.

That’s so true. I refuse to connect with coworkers on social media for that very reason. I don’t want working relationships to be destroyed.

I was thinking the same thing. I'd rather know the truth about someone and be disappointed than think they are someone they're not.
