My sweet old man (pictured with his baby sisters) seems to have dementia & woke me up at 3am in distress again. I wish I could talk to him & have him tell me what's wrong. At least when it happens he wakes me up to look for comfort & I do my best. Other than this he seems to be a happy healthy 19yo.

Cognitive decline is common in elderly cats. 19 in cat years is 92 in people years. He gets confused at night and needs help with normal routine. Also his vet and regular checkups including blood work tell us he's physcially healthy.

My father did the same thing. Hold him, stroke his hair, offer warm comfort.

That's exactly what I do and he calms down and cuddles up to me.

Oh Angela - I’m so glad that he’s got you. And you have him. It’s so hard to see our pets in distress.

Thank you! We've been giving him a mild sedative for anxiety at bedtime & it has reduced the the frequency of his episodes plus I can calm him quicker. What's funny is he's super affectionate when it's happening and purrs but also meows in distress until I can get him to settle in my arms.
