from @ JustFara on the bad app:

"So, I spoke to people getting food at a food bank and here are some things I learned from those in need:
1. Everyone donates Kraft Mac and Cheese in the box. They can rarely use it because it needs milk and butter which is hard to get from regular food banks.

2. Boxed milk is a treasure, as kids need it for cereal which they also get a lot of.
3. Everyone donates pasta sauce and spaghetti noodles.
4. They cannot eat all the awesome canned veggies and soup unless you put a can opener in too or buy pop tops.

20. Everyone loves Stove Top Stuffing.

In all the years I have donated food at the Holidays, I bought what I thought they wanted, but have never asked. I am glad I did. If you are helping a Family this Christmas, maybe this can help you tailor it more. It does for me!"

We volunteer every week for 2nd Harvest. Serve up to 1300 families in 2 hours. The pick-up is a box of fresh produce, bag of dry goods (beans, rice, cans, nuts) and either eggs/milk or frozen chicken. Sometimes extra eggs or bread. Food banks don't want your unwanted pantry goods. Donate money.

I’ve heard oatmeal is a good item to donate because of it mass appeal and because it’s considered a food staple in many cultures. A large box can feed a large family breakfast for several days and each family member can prepare as they wish.

Sorry. They appear to have a stealth paywall. Just what people interested in food banks need...

Piggybacking on this: many companies have programs where they match employee donations. I was able to get my day job to add our local food bank to the approved list. Now when they get my monthly donation it is matched by my employer.

Yes to all this. Our local food pantry has a website, many do, where you can check their current greatest needs. Also the items they don't want. Some stores donate quantities of goods. I give money, because they can get better value and target it better, than I can as an outsider. Year round.

Food banks always take cash donations, like grocery store gift cards, so clients can buy fresh milk, bread, eggs, and other perishables to go with long-shelf-life items. I highly recommend this option for people looking to help the hungry. And yes boxed milk is always great as a donated item.

Not mine. The produce I get is full of fruit flies and maggots, they give yellowed frozen milk in bags, the bread they give is usually expired that day or the next or r moldy, and all the canned goods r dented all to shit. No toiletries, pads, or even soap and shampoo.
