I call it ‘The former Yugoslavia.’ Yes, I’m that old. When I was there, 2 things happened.
1. McDonalds opened.
2. The war broke out and money became toilet paper.
I decided to go to Greece.

I was in the former Yugoslavia in the early 1980s, From the border with Italy down to the border with Albania. Pravda squares were commonly used as toilet paper. My travel companion was excited to find Patrick Swayze on a square, which he tucked into his guidebook. :)

Oh sorry, yes! Yugoslavia was still a Russian satellite country and conditions were bleak. Commonly, people used the Russian newspaper "Pravda" cut into squares, as toilet paper in their outhouses/bathrooms.
