When I see a patient suffering with heart failure, I don't tell them to "buck up", "it's all in your head", or "snap out of it".

And yet, so many people feel comfortable telling someone with #depression the exact same thing.

We must change the narrative on #mentalhealth in America.

Clinical depression can be as devastating, even as deadly, as cancer. It has to be taken seriously and treated properly.

My daughter died of depression by suicide. If she had died of cancer, I’d still have most of my friends. The stigma is real.

I really hate it when someone tells me "You'll get over it", or "Smile".
Clinical depression isn't something you "get over". It's a struggle for me and others every day. Many people have little or no access to healthcare, including some sort of mental healthcare.

Mental Healthcare is Healthcare. Since the brain is still part of the body, stop separating the 2 by language, which supports Health Insurance Industry's discriminatory practices (separate coverage/higher out of pocket expenses). #ChangeTheLanguage #EliminateTheStigma

It would also help to bring mental health professionals into medical practices/clinics, so there's no separation of services, much easier to screen patients, and refer them to the specialist DOWN THE HALL, which also eliminates stigma.

How about "Hey, you just need to turn that frown upside down!"

When depressed being asked "How are you?" is hard. I usually say...
"Do you want me to lie or tell you the truth?"
They usually look at me really blank. #mentalhealth @Zeketayler

Thank you so much for what you said here. I say it all the time. People don't realize how deadly depression is, especially treatment resistant. The stigma has to change. Your voice will make a huge difference!

The wind of change started blowing a while ago. We need to help hasten it to a whirlwind and gale all in one.

It’s so unfortunate that we as a society don’t treat mental health like we would a physical issue. We need to get better.

We should begin by stopping the hate people have for anything outside the "norm".

Every single person living is going through something.

Once that fact is accepted, add 5lbs of compassion, 4 cups empathy stir lovingly & proceed with care.

I agree I've been guilty of it myself and I know it's not helpful. I deny my depression so I wanted others to do the same. The other day I said to my daughter I'm depressed she said welcome to my world and I said what makes you think I just got here? Because I hid it. Not good. 🙄
