Do you just look at your parents and notice they are growing old and get this really tight feeling in your chest?

Our body is marked with the lines of life, put there by love and laughter, suffering and tears. It is beautiful!

I took this photo in February 2020. My father's hand on my mother's, comforting her as she lay in the hospital. She died in February 2022 at 94. My dad, 95, is still alive, but dementia has taken hold of him. I cherish this photo, as sad as it makes me.

I too have death bed photos of my parents. It seems odd to many people but I find them somehow comforting.

I was living in Florida for 18 years, and returned to my birth place (Canada) 5 years ago after my mom passed away to be with my dad. He is 93 years young, and I cherish every moment with him.

Old, wrinkled faces got that way from laughing, crying, and hopefully making funny faces with kids. 🙂

When I look at my hands, I see my grandmother's hands. Wrinkles on faces come from smiles and tears. A blank face when older would be empty.

My own aging hand is just about there, and every time I notice it I think of my mother, now gone. I'm grateful I am lucky enough to grow old. I miss my ancestors and my son will miss me; how bittersweet is life.

I only interchanged with my mat. grandfather a few times in my life. My earliest memory of him is watching him in his chair read the newspaper. Most important to me he had the patience to show me how to tie my shoe laces
I can remember his patience how happy we both were when I managed to tie them.

I have a very similar memory of my biological father, of me sitting on his lap while he taught me how to tie my shoes.

He left when I was only 2-3 yrs old and I never saw him again.

Very touching. My mother turned 87 TODAY and she's here with me in Arizona from the Chicago area during the freezing cold and it's a special time continuing to have her around. Thank you for this post!

My parents are 90 and 87. They live on the east coast and I on the west coast. I go back four+ times a year to be with them. I feel so fortunate to watch them age and still have them in my life, and remember when they were young as well.

Many years ago I was in carpool line with my elementary school age son and was complaining about my crow’s feet. He said, “Mom those are your smile lines. They are there because you are happy.” Out of the mouths of babes. 💗

I've always referred to my aging as "footprints of time on my body." We recently lost my husband's parents, aged 99 and 93. They were the best people. We really miss them. Thank you for your post.

My parents are 85 and were young when I was born. I'm incredibly lucky that they both remain heallthy and mobile and sharp as tacks. The longer we all live, the harder time I have imagining a future they don't inhabit. So, yes, I know what you mean.

Your parents are living, breathing historians. Spend time with them, listen to their stories. Ask them all of the questions now that you may one day wish you had. Share their stories with your children. By doing so you are planting seeds for the oral teaching of your family history.

This. I think about how many times a parent or a grandparent told me about a game they used to play or a song they used to listen to; the then uninteresting details about their lives at the time, and wish I'd asked more questions.

I am that parent. Not quite so old yet, but the wrinkles don’t match the mind or heart.
