Wednesday micro-story challenge: in 300 characters or less, write a story (fiction or non; it could even be a poem) about...getting lost.

Oops! Once again I almost forgot it was Wednesday...better late in the day than not at all!

I could swear the knots on that tree trunk were the same ones I saw leading away from my tent to look for a tree of lesser stature to cut for wood. Then I saw a brook for the first time in weeks. I sat and cried; embarrassed for a good long hour.
I stood and steeled. Ready to find my way back.

My aunt said she'd had to choose which parent to go with in the divorce. She asked the judge if she could choose the dog, Barker, instead. Because he was always so glad to see her. He accepted who she was, even when she said the wrong thing. He wouldn't nag her to smile. He licked her tears away.

Running
Blinded by tears
Cloaked in fear
Tumbling over twigs
Of my memories

Light
At the end of the tunnel
A brick wall
Impenetrable
But for hope

Stumbling still
Groping at fronds
Of cobweb wrapping my vision
Spinning out of control
Darkness depending
Consuming reality
I'm lost

Corn. To the left, right, ahead, behind. They trudge along the path.
“We passed this section already.”
“You promised us lunch.”
“Corn mazes blow.”

April wandered orchards, chasing whispers of a golden sun. Amid vines, she stumbled into a raisin haven. Sweet laughter echoed, as the sun dipped low. Lost in vineyard dreams, April found joy beneath the wrinkled sun-kissed grapes.

Five hundred miles behind him, any number more to go, he had no plan beyond stopping when the sun rose, wherever it rose.

The collapse of his former life, as he already thought of it, had been complete and total, the only remnants left this car, a loose pile of clothes, and no sense of who he was.

Getting lost is a concept I do not understand. Since you always have yourself with you, you cannot possibly be lost. Rather I posit it is your surroundings that may be unfamiliar to you, leaving you bewildered and longing for a cup of tea and a bun, but lost, never.

Once seen everywhere, lauded as the sole constant bedrock of society, sought after by the educated & ignorant alike, it has become so dirtied, twisted, & maligned that trying to find the truth/facts amongst the sea of misinformation is akin to looking for a needle in a haystack via funhouse mirrors.
