1. Late fees, especially on kids’ library cards are stupid. It doesn’t “teach kids responsibility.” It teaches them to be ashamed of coming to the library if they can’t pay the fine.

I may have “accidentally” deleted fines when kids with armfuls of books they’re excited to read came up to the checkout desk. Librarians want people to enjoy reading.

2. Many librarians don’t want you to whisper and won’t “shush” you. We want you to play, participate, ask questions and enjoy reading. I prefer to shush the shushers.

3. Folks who are unhoused or don’t have a permanent address can check out books in many library systems. Please talk to a librarian. Everyone should have the chance to enjoy reading.

4. There is no shame reading books from the Children’s or Young Adult section. There are some excellent books there! I’ve been known to retrieve books for folks who felt embarrassed getting those books for themselves. Did I mention we want you to enjoy reading?

6. College students need what public libraries offer in an academic library. They need board games, book clubs, recreational reading, craft programs, therapy dogs, etc.

9. If you check out a book by James Patterson and it gets damaged or lost, usually it’s ok. Libraries get so many damn copies of those, they dont have shelf space for them anyway. Just enjoy reading it!

Poor Cathy. I'd go see her and look at her camera roll. 😁

Lovely thread. If I didn’t have libraries I’d have nothing but books in my house yet couldn’t have afforded to buy more than a tiny few - maybe 2%? - of the many thousands I’ve read. They call our Cleveland Public Library “The People’s University”. So true.

I like reading YA books, aside from Judy Blume there weren't a whole lot of YA books for me to read when I was actually a YA. I'm just having my second YA-hood.

Good tips! Baltimore County has really upgraded their systems to now have self-check out. Set a few books on the mat after scanning your card and you’re done. I’m in my 70’s and I read YA books all the time. Good stories and it helps me to relate to how different it is to be a teen today.
