What's a movie critics didn't like that you think is great?
Professor Kyle @blackcatproseSeeing that this movie didn't get great reviews, I'm filing it in my slate of good, sometimes great movies that, because they defy genre expectation, the critics can't put them into a box & therefore don't get.12:19 AM - Dec 03, 2023

I came up with a couple, so far.
Thelma and Louise: The hypocritical outrage from the wm critics that this film was somehow "glorifying" these women's crimin', when the main point of the film is what drove them to it flew right over critics' heads, had women everywhere rolling their eyes. 1/

Troy: Not a Brad Pitt fan and he's the weakest actor in it, but he's good enough and the rest of the cast is stellar and makes up for him. Don't recall why critics didn't like it, I thought it was a great film. 2/2

Mom and Dad Save the World. It was just flat out goofy. Jon Lovitz chewed ALL the scenery.
(Jeffrey Jones is problematic, what with his conviction, but the movie was well before anything became public).

I find if a movie is panned by Rotten Tomatoes & liked by the public, I’m probably going to enjoy it. My husband & I count on RT as a Hipster-nonsense guide for movies. “The hipsters don’t like it? Let’s watch.” I’m old enough to remember when hipsters were cool cats, not obnoxious posers.

Critics, mostly male, don't appreciate the Paul Feig films with female leads. Several with Melissa McCarthy like Spy and The Heat are gems, and A Simple Favor is divine. I didn't realize that Last Christmas is his, too.

Those are all such great movies!
And yeah, that was definitely my first thought when I saw the low reviews. Critics – those who get to choose what's good for the rest of us – need to be MUCH more diverse. Representation matters.

Every time I stumble on The Heat on cable I watch it again and am always entertained....I don't understand how it wasn't a total smash with 3 or 4 sequels by now

I liked “They Cloned Tyrone,” seeing Teyonah Parris as Yo-Yo after watching her in “The Marvels” was big fun. Plus, there was this bit in the movie where they flashed the old projectionist cue of a white circle in the top right corner of the frame to signify a switch to the next reel.

Good one! Probably because it's a genre-crosser – horror plus (accidental?) comedy before that was a thing.

I know there have been several, but I can't think of any off the top of my head. I'll have to think about it. I don't usually pay attention to critics for that reason.

Yeah, I don't put a lot of stock in them, especially any individual one because taste is subjective. I find a really low Rotten Tomatoes score is right more often than not...but many times I've completely disagreed.
