There is an implied x or * (multiplication symbol) between the 5 and the (7-4). Therefore:

60 ÷ 5 x (7-4)
60 ÷ 5 x 3
12 x 3
36

If the intent is to have an answer of 4, then they should format it as:

60 ÷ (5 x (7-4))
60 ÷ (5 x 3)
60 ÷ 15
4

Remove ambiguity when formatting the problem.

Parentheses (grouping symbols) are there for a reason! Egads! Basic Algebra.

It’s 36 all day long. My 7th grade algebra teacher was a genius, and also my favorite aunt. She was one of my mother’s 15 siblings. Apparently granny was also good at math, knowing exactly how many kids were needed to farm the property.

Tried just clicking the spout, instead it voted.
Not even sure which one it picked.

Half century ago, was told to work from the inside out (parenthesis first, then exponents, multiplying/dividing, addition/subtraction in that order) so 36?

There is absolutely nothing ambiguous about the question. If you disagree with me, think hard about your first algebra class or Google “order of operations”. Math is fun!

When I first read it I got 36 as the answer, but then I started to doubt myself, because it seems like every time these kinds of math problems show up I find out the way I learned math was changed to a new way later & I'm wrong so I wondered if it was 4. Math shouldn't be ambiguous.

You are right, it shouldn’t be ambiguous. The poll is currently almost 50 to 50, which literally means something must definitely be wrong somewhere. The whole of the other 50% cannot possibly be wrong. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Y’all, I had to relearn this with my 6th grader just a couple of months ago so it’s fresh for me. PEMDAS: Parentheses, Exponent, Multiply, Divide, Addition, Subtract. The answer is 4. Am I right? 🧐

Syntax matters. The 5 here is explicitly the multiplier of the bracketed part. If there was a ❌ sign between them, you would just solve it left to right after solving the brackets.

The answer is that if there's enough ambiguity in the way the equation was written to cause an argument as to order of operations, the person who wrote it is wrong.

60
_______
5(7-4)

Is a better format.

The way you have it written is the equivalent of:
60 ÷ ( 5 x ( 7 - 4 ) )
With "60 ÷ 5 x ( 7 - 4 )", the "5 x" has no priority over "60 ÷ 5". So you go left to right, doing "60 ÷" before "5 x"

Good point. I would like to know the real world word problem that was used to set up the equation so that we can check if the equation itself was set up properly.

It's order of operations. PEMDAS. Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication/Division in order left to right, Addition/Subtraction in order left to right.
So solve for the parentheses first, then complete in order, left to right.

The MDAS is solved in order left to right. 60/5 occurs to the left of x3 so you solve for that before you multiply by 3.
