Researchers gave homeless people $750 per month for a year, no questions asked. The recipients spent the money on food, housing, transportation, clothing, and health care. And after six months, only 12% of those who received funds were still homeless.

Oh, no. That's happening all over. As if homelessness was an actual choice.

Gotta keep up their end of the contract by keeping a certain occupancy rate for those mega prisons.

This just seems so ...obvious.
And also threatening to the unearned sense of superiority among a certain segment of folks.

Too many people are ultra concerned about how other people spend their money. They would rather provide vouchers for services and goods - that place limits on what is available - than trust people to get what they need.

Very paternalistic.

If you tried the same thing in a rural town—the economic equivalent of a coral reef—people might be able to take their lives and livelihoods back from Walmart and its tax dodging, inherited wealth owners.

This happens every time they try it. UBI is actually a really good idea

Yup. It was called Mincome when it was tested in Canada. People got housed, left bad jobs, went back to school, and got better jobs. It was a real success until they cancelled it without notice.

It's a GREAT idea.

Which is why we can't have it.

In the US, a measure for UBI would pass if, and only if, they could prevent the "wrong" type of people from getting it. Racism was baked onto the very foundation of our country and we haven't done enough to eradicate it. Until that changes, no UBI.

Hell to the yeah! Solutions to poverty and homelessness in America are not rocket science! Will a single approach work? No, but a concerted string of efforts would be almost enough! The narrative of grabbing the money and spending foolishly should be rightly dead...

When community works to remove barriers, instead of creating them, it allows more folks to move towards success.

A similar project in Canada saw 52% of the money given go to rent and food, 15% on meds and bills, 16% on clothes and trasportation and a 70% increase in food security.

In the county where I live, at the beginning of covid, the homeless were taken off the streets and housed in empty motels. Social Workers, Drug Counselors and Public Health Nurses visited. In ER, we saw a huge drop in homeless patients. Housing and access to support is huge.

...and racism.

Never underestimate the effects of racism.

People are more than willing to starve to death if it means that more of "those" people will starve to death too.

This only surprises those who believe all unhoused persons are automatically abusing substances or are less than human.

Another shining example of how vile Reagan's narrative of welfare queen was and is, and how evil the GOPs war on public assistance truly is.

The GOP thrives on anger tho. If we are making sure basic needs are met for everyone, there is a lot less to be angry about. Their house of cards falls. They have nothing else.

Let's not forget that the "welfare queen" was Black. Public assistance is untenable if it helps her and people like her.

The only way UBI would pass is if there was some way to ensure that only the (w)right people received it.
