Held the door for a mom with baby at my doc's office this a.m. A male drug-rep waiting to talk to staff got wide-eyed & said, "That was really nice of you." I told him I was well-trained. It's weird how opening doors for folks (aka civility & manners) is viewed as something extraordinary these days.

I think that specific courtesy is still common, but ironically it creates a challenge in secure buildings, like most offices. We have to be "untrained" from doing this, as everyone is required to card in.

I don't think I'd hold the door for someone in a secure building where key-cards are required for entrance. But when I do hold doors open for folks anywhere else--schools, medical buildings, wherever interior doors aren't automated--I get looks and often compliments. But, for me, it's just normal.
