Here’s Utah Rep. Phil Lyman quoted in the Salt Lake City Tribune regarding the ship v. bridge incident in Baltimore.

“This is what happens when you have Governors who prioritize diversity over the wellbeing [sic] and security of citizens.”

Others have produced similar cogent commentary.

Yes, it’s a well-known fact that diversity programs cause 95,000-ton ships to lose power and find themselves at the mercy of wind and tide.

With this, Mr. Lyman has undoubtedly moved into the frontrunner spot in the race to be The Orange One’s V.P. pick.

Not a word about the super sizing of cargo ships and lack of regulation of such?

My recollection is that they are regulated where they are flagged. As to behavior when in USA waters, USCG sets the rules.

I'd bet that a WW2 Baltimore Class heavy cruiser (14,500 tons) could take out that bridge. 14,500 tons is only 15% of the displacement of the ship that did the damage.

This is a “yes, and”. Regulations for maintenance are very lax.
Also, just a few years after the bridge was built, there was a similar disaster. Newer bridges might fare better.
