Here's Arizona's 1864 abortion law, taken word for word from Calif's first abortion law.
It's included as part of a section about the crime of poisoning people. It provides an exception for physicians using their professional judgment to save a woman's life. Con artists often killed pregnant women.

Of note: Arizona did *not* use Calif's 1861 revised abortion law, which was much harsher, adding penalties for the woman seeking an abortion and much longer prison sentences.

19th century abortion laws largely started as intending protections for women from unskilled charlatans. That didn't last.

In response to Lil.
So @Lil , does the 1864 law provide cover for women and their physicians who determine an abortion is medically necessary?

In 1901, the Territory revised the law to an exception for anyone, not just physicians, if it's to save the life of the mother. The State adopted that in 1912.

In 2022, AZ passed a long, convoluted revised abortion law. It's a muddle for doctors, of course, designed to frighten them into submission.
