Chatting with a neighbor this evening while out walking my dog. She told us her outdoor/indoor cat had been playing with something in the yard. Turned out to be a COPPERHEAD. She tried to get the snake away from the cat by GRABBING ITS TAIL (the snake's tail, not the cat's).

Naturally it bent back around and bit her hand. So she spent the weekend in the hospital. She said "I might still lose my finger" so cavalierly she might've been saying "I think I'll order pizza for dinner" or "I'd like to take up yoga" and not like she might ACTUALLY LOSE A BODY PART.

Anyway we knew there were copperheads around so we were already careful. But shit. Never met anyone that happened to before.

What I read here is that the cat laid a trap for it's owner. Very smart those cats.

I had a friend get bit. They never saw what kind of snake that it was. He had to hike one mile out of the woods and stopped at a firehouse. He stayed in the hospital 3 days. He had a few vials of antivenom. Very expensive. He never lost anything. It was the area between his thumb and first finger.

My sister's old dog got bitten by copperheads twice. She spent a lot at the emergency vet but he ended up being OK too.
