Chatting with a neighbor this evening while out walking my dog. She told us her outdoor/indoor cat had been playing with something in the yard. Turned out to be a COPPERHEAD. She tried to get the snake away from the cat by GRABBING ITS TAIL (the snake's tail, not the cat's).

Naturally it bent back around and bit her hand. So she spent the weekend in the hospital. She said "I might still lose my finger" so cavalierly she might've been saying "I think I'll order pizza for dinner" or "I'd like to take up yoga" and not like she might ACTUALLY LOSE A BODY PART.

Anyway we knew there were copperheads around so we were already careful. But shit. Never met anyone that happened to before.

In response to Sneaky Burrito.
Keep a long-handled square shovel in your yard within easy, unobstructed reach, and get one for your 9-fingered neighbor. She knows now to never grab a snake by the tail, but if she sees her cat playing with a copperhead again, she needs to know how to chop off its head (the snake's - not the cat's)
