Does anyone know of a good pet-safe weed killer I can use before I plant grass seed?

4-6 months of a black silage to smother, or 2-4 weeks of a clear plastic tarp to solarize, if you live somewhere that the sun is strong this time of year. Solarizing only works mid-summer in the northeast.

Thanks. I was hoping for something I could spray and throw some seeds down a few days later.

There are no safe herbicides. Tillage, plastic, or hand pulling are the alternative options. Fire also works, but only on annual weeds, which are probably not what you are dealing with. I hand pull lawn weeds, but only if they are invasive (like mustard). Weeds are more drought tolerant than grass.
