I wonder if the portraits reflect them when they died, or if they were commissioned earlier for use after death.

He looks quite young, and very handsome.

Great question. I don't know. But many funerary portraits seem to be of younger faces. Here's another from the same era & place, a woman.

Wow she was gorgeous. Now I wonder if they were also made to flatter.

So I'm guessing it's something they prepared for...and they were probably pretty wealthy if they had one.

It's interesting how widespread and enduring funeral portraits are.
