You know how many of us were "allowed" to stay outside "Until the street lights came on" in summer?

Did you also have your mother/parent say to you early in on weekend mornings:

"Go outside and don't come back inside until the street lights come on"

Because I am that old.

Same. All summer, "Why are you home? Streetlights aren't on."

We could live in smaller homes. You slept & ate in your homes. You watched evening television w the kids sitting on the floor because there wasn't room for a giant sectional. You spent more time outdoors & on porches. Climate change & a greater sense of fear have changed our culture in a generation.

Fear, all sorts.

Even though we're far more likely to be know our attackers, we had the irrational fear, Stranger Danger, drilled into us as the population was exploding.

I suspect population density probably also plays a part in the shift. World population 1974, 4 billion, now over 8 billion.

The explosion of television stations and sensationalized media reporting of crime followed by the epidemic of school shootings led to a culture of fear, which led to a spike in gun ownership for "personal protection." It's the foundation of where we are today.

I used the term "Nancy Grace-ification" of childhood in a paper once.

When we were kids, our parents might have gotten the side-eye of the community, but then came 24 hour news and Nancy. No one wanted to hear her asking, "What were they thinking?!" for letting your child out of sight for a second.

Now, with social media, literally the entire world can --- and will -- tell you what an awful parent you are, about everything and anything.

I've watched people post a perfectly cute pic or video of their kid doing something so normal and tens or even hundreds of comments picking them apart.

Almost seems accidental.

Almost.
