You know how many of us were "allowed" to stay outside "Until the street lights came on" in summer?

Did you also have your mother/parent say to you early in on weekend mornings:

"Go outside and don't come back inside until the street lights come on"

Because I am that old.

I remember those summer days where mom would give each of us a paper bag with a PBJ sandwich and apple in it. The instructions were: "See you at dinner time and if you come home earlier you better be bleeding." My parents loved us very much. It's just the way it was. Those were glorious days.

Same here, and you better not get yourself injured and come home before dinner was called. After dinner we played outside until Grandma yelled for us to come home and take a quick washcloth wipe down and off to bed.

When grandma yelled, we better be close enough to hear her too.

Those were the days. We could sit on car hoods and hang out, drink from the hydrant, climb up to the roof, jump from garage roof to garage roof and traverse the whole alley, climb fences when the gate was locked, etc. Childhood had its dangers, but it was mostly kids from other neighborhoods.

There used to be public service announcements on TV to remind folx they had kids. Every night, just before the local news, an ominous voice would come over the airwaves: "10:00 p.m., Do you know where your children are?"

The curfews seemed to be for both the kids and their parents. 🤣

My parents took us to Vegas on a road trip in 1969. I was 11. We walked to a buffet dinner fm our motel & there was a long line and clouds of cigarette smoke from the casino and restaurant. I started to feel sick to my stomach. My mom gave me the motel room key and I walked 2 blks *by myself* back.

Growing up in San Francisco, we were told to "get lost", but the rule was always to be home by dark.

We didn’t have streetlights when I was a kid. We had a loud brass bell, like a small ship’s bell, by the front door. Mom would ring it when dinner was ready. Every kid in the neighborhood would head home when that bell rang. At night, we just got told ‘be home by dark’. We Boomer kids were feral.

Kind of. My parents didn't trust people, so it meant backyard and don't annoy the neighbors w/noise. In the Summer, we were enrolled in swim, diving, lifesaving lessons and then swim team so we were out of the house all day at the community pool. Small town. Everyone knows everyone.

I don’t think our parents told us to stay out because we were usually home alone all day but we did stay out most of the day.

We could live in smaller homes. You slept & ate in your homes. You watched evening television w the kids sitting on the floor because there wasn't room for a giant sectional. You spent more time outdoors & on porches. Climate change & a greater sense of fear have changed our culture in a generation.
