I went to the doctor recently and went through a series of "Is something wrong or am I just getting older?" questions. And I wish there were doctors to help us age like they'd tell us what to expect and help us transition. Does that already exist?

I was lucky enough to have a doctor who at least tried to help me navigate. But he'd be the first to admit he wasn't as well prepared for it as we'd have liked.

1/2 I do t think it exists… even complementsry health people are so focused on preventing aging that no one talks about what to expect and how to relate to some of the inevitables- what can be prevented - what can’t etc. Huge failure- our system is disease focused because of the way MDs are

2/2 trained and the insurance industry. I have medical training and used to educate MDs. As an informed person I feel like I go on a major hunt trying to find people who can talk to me about these things… searched far and wide for a menopause doc who would prescribe bio-identical HRT.

Not sure how much hope I hold out for this.

In the past year:
1. I've had to educate a doctor that rashes present differently on Black patients than they do on white patients
2. A lot of SA Survivors do not get regular gynecological exams bc they find them re-traumatizing

You're right. Unfortunately, the medical profession is rooted in systemic racism and I don't see that changing. Finding a medical professional who understands and advocates for you is hard to find. And I feel for them because I know they also face racism in medical school.

I've found Functional, Integrative, and Anti-Aging practitioners to be the most helpful, but they seldom accept insurance. Pubmed is a rich resource of biomedical research, particularly for those of us who can read and understand studies. Otherwise, female patients are SOL under current med system.

Absolutely necessary! The experience of aging/transition to menopause by itself can be confusing & overwhelming. The response to the wide range of my symptoms was disappointing at first and later just pissed me off. Doing my own homework & getting what I needed took years & finding a diff doctor.

From my experience, I had to seek out alternative assistance. I read books, found a holistic focused MD, got nutritional assistance.

Is that what gerontologists were supposed to do, but for elderly? We need a later-middle age transitional specialist.

Not yet, there isn't. Closest is to search out evidence based people like Dr Jen Gunter or Amanda Thebe or Dr Annice Mukherjee (among a few that I've come across). It's a bunch of piecing together of info. Hard part being the journey can vary so much from woman to woman.

Jen Gunter is AWESOME. She's a tremendous resource (and fun too)! But yes, we all have our own experiences. Let's share them. No hiding.

Exactly. I have been thinking about this for a while now. It would make this aging process so much easier.

It isn’t something I get from my doctor and it is hard for me to decide what is important enough to bring up.
