I'm old enough to remember when we were actually taught in school:

"Those Who Do Not Learn From History Are Doomed to Repeat It."

So I guess we're now doomed as a country. Because the shit the Republicans are doing is, well...SHIT.

This. I wish I had been taught more in school, not less. I didn’t ever feel bad — even as a kid, I understood that I personally wasn’t responsible for the wrongdoings of my ancestors, but I understood I was responsible for doing better than them. To paraphrase, when we know better, we do better…

Here's the thing, of course, I did feel bad for a while. But that motivated me to be a better person.

There were films I watched as a child that strongly influenced my ideas about race & justice. Diary of Miss Jane Pittman was one, Sounder, & of course Roots.
Say what you will about the 70s but

Generations of white people have been taught most of the horrors that were inflicted on African Americans and we all lived, why are kids all of a sudden so damn fragile?

White History Month, needs to showcase all the actions whites have done in the order to preserve white people. Included should be the massacres, KKK, racist immigration laws, property programs, and all the racist leaders that closed off higher education to people of color and women.

I hope they do feel, I hope they can look at the stories of people that have suffered and truly feel the anguish of so many. There is a difference between feeling blame and feeling empathy. I want the kids to learn the true history and be better than those in the past.

Mmm, thinking about your comment re -not making white kids feel bad (I am white/pinky/ochery btw), I'm not so sure allowing them to feel is such a bad thing. Empathy is being able to imagine being in the other person's shoes, it comes when you can identify with i.e. feel what the other's experience

Agreed. I think the writer may have been suggesting that white kids shouldn't feel bad as in being responsible for the behavior of their forbearers. That's how I read it.

True. Racism is taught, via constant indoctrination, kids are not born pre-packaged with racism....

I’m ashamed to admit that at 34, I learned about the Tulsa Massacre from a visit to the Smithsonian African American History Museum. It blew my mind that something so pivotal had never been discussed once in my education. I’m angry that American history was kept from me and grateful for SAAHM!
