I’m getting ready to appear on a foreign policy podcast. I’ll respond to everyone once I’m done.

In the meantime, I’d like opinions on a FP question.

Which African country do you think should be on the U.N. Security Council? I genuinely want to hear from you.

Nigeria had an important role in the pandemic with their discovery and sharing of information about COVID variants. The work they did helped save lives & puts Nigeria in top spot for me.

If you mean permanent members, none. There shouldn't *be* permanent members, at least w/vetos.

If you mean temporary members? I'm not a specialist by any stretch, I guess I'd suggest Zimbabwe, Namibia, Egypt, Morocco, Madagascar or Tanzania.

Maybe two or more.

Thoughtful response. Curious, why not a permanent member? I’m not asking bc I’m invested in the idea one way or another, genuinely curious.

Botswana is one of the best-managed, least corrupt countries on the continent. It doesn't seem powerful, but it is. I have been there several times and I am impressed as anything. I spent 14 years in South Africa and visit it fairly often but SA is too corrupt to recommend.

I would say Nigeria. It’s already one of the largest countries in the world by population and the largest economy in Africa.

Also curious what you might think about giving it to the African Union?

I am embarrassed to confess that I am far too ignorant about the the politics of the countries of the African continent to offer even a guess.

This is why I love public education moments. It’s a great way to start a dialogue and maybe gain new knowledge. I’ll try to be mindful to post more about the topic.

Whichever is elected to fill the slot allocated to Africa. Same as currently. I don't think any one country should have primacy.

Wish I knew more about the African continent to have a more informed answer. Maybe the one that would be considered most progressive with a stable government.

Except the President elect is a drug baron. If Peter Obi somehow manages to get it reversed in Court, Nigeria would be ideal.
