Sorry to be a wet blanket, but... Of course I'm glad to be rid of the toxic nonsense on the bird site. But it would be nice to see respectfully opposing views now and then. Living in an echo chamber is how Rs got to where they are today.

I agree. I have friends who can provide a rational argument against abortion. I have another friend who was willing to have a non-fraught conversation about owning an AK-47-style rifle

I don’t agree with these people, but I’m interested in knowing how they got where they were. And I despair when people interested and willing to engage are castigated for the mere effort.

The people on Spoutible are about planning, cohesing and finding ways to save our Democracy, about protecting our marginalized communities from a fascist party intent on destroying them. These "opposing views"...you speak of and are seeking out...would be located within that group...not here.

it depends on the topic. are we debating which infrastructure projects to fund, whether minority voter suppression is ok, should women should control their own bodies, or if my marriage certificate will stay valid? one of these things is not like the other.

This is exactly to the point. "Respectfully opposing views" sounds good but it depends on what kind of views you're talking about. Equality, bodily autonomy, and fair treatment are not negotiable and any opposition is inherently disrespectful.

If the people you follow all seem to have the same point of view, and you want to view different posts, perhaps follow a lot more people. Go into explore and see what others are thinking and follow those who have different points of view.

If you can find a Republican who is able to have a respectful conversation about anything, please do invite them. So far, I haven't found any.

I'm curious... what is "respectful" in saying LGBTQ+ don't deserve to exist? That's what the "opposing side" believes. They also think liberals should be murdered with no consequences. Where is the "respect" in that? Spoutible can be an echo chamber; it does not have to be.

As a European of multi-lingual country, I really like hearing out various points of views.

Spoutible seem to me, an Independent, too much of an echo chamber.

Of course basic rights can not be questioned. But what they exactly are deserves discussion.

Not every discussion has to be some tug of war battle of opposing views. Rational people can actually come to a compromise without everything turning into a pissing contest of views. Ideas can be shaped by consensus and cooperation without the need for a toxic dialectic.

Why does every discussion HAVE to have an opposing view? I had a toxic boyfriend once, who insisted that I never compromised with him when I pushed back. The truth was that I picked my battles. I compromised with him all the time, he was just too narcissistic to see it.

Nazism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny... those aren't "opposing views." They are hateful, hurtful, and wrong. I think we can ALL agree on that, no? Those views should never be allowed to fester and grow. Ever.

You don't ever let Nazis in. Once you do, they take over and then you get the same hate speech and harassment problems that Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube still refuse to grapple with.

When I hear white people use words like “respectful” or “civil” what I hear is “I should be allowed to ignore your anger and frustration. No matter how just or moral your demands, this is my excuse for not listening to you and never holding myself or other white people to account for failing you.”

I’ve been on here since February + have indeed seen a few respectful debates about various issues ( and not just the “Canadian Food Wars”. But rarely about the basics of democracy, or human rights for all. And I’m fine w/ that. I know what the opposition thinks because I read/listen to other sources

I listen to lots of points of view.

I won't listen to someone who dehumanizes trans people, erases queer people, and dominates people from the BIPOC communities.

Talk to me about capitalism and socialism, faith or atheism, mayonnaise or Miracle Whip, and it's all good

The toxicity from Twitter isn't pushback. It's the cruel responses, flippant answers, supremacist replies, and pure bigoted hate.

I don't think thoae people and those responses should be encouraged here.

Yeah there is no respectful view that says we can't live. We can't marry. We don't have rights to our own bodies. So I'm not sure what this person is looking for... we do disagree on here (ok it's s/x's raisins & pretzels) but on how to get to where we want to go, not how to stop people from living.

In order to have a discussion you need to put in the effort and express an opinion. This is what creates the back and forth you seem to crave. On Twitter thousands of people never said a thing because they were shut down. Here they speak freely. That is the beauty of a site without hate.
