The New Madrid fault is fascinating. I think it's the only major fault not on the edge of a tectonic plate.

I think the idea is this is the site of a failed tectonic plate split - the USA Could have been two separate
landmasses. Or at least a giant rift valley.

#EqNZ Periodic reminder: Do many small earthquakes mean anything?

Short answer: no

Longer answer: a localised swarm of small earthquakes may be a pointer to something bigger coming. Or it might not!!

Very long answer:

It's the cost of doing business on a fault line.

If you are going to insist on doing business on a fault line.

Short answer: No. Little earthquakes just say you're living on a fault line.

Longer answer: a localised swarm of small earthquakes may be a pointer to something bigger coming. Or it might not!!

I don't think it is different in Germany.

Accidents are still higher in Germany per km travelled.

It's just that Germany, unlike the US, had embraced working from home so the km travelled has also dropped.

It's very much an average.

It's most 1 infecting 1 and then the occasional 1 infecting 20 or 1 infecting 50.

Not really. The confidence error bars are huge due to very small case numbers.

It's a problematic error because many inhabitants commute to the nearby city which acts as a reservoir of infection. So case numbers don't really reflect locally spread.

But some residents asked for the data

I look to the US for the car accidents and aircrafts. Our data is slow to be released and we don't have many flights.

Ram raids are topical in NZ with a recent surge. I'm sure copy chatting is a factor and the publicity didn't help. And boredom during covid lockdowns. I also think brain danage

The official goal in US and NZ is to audit every taxpayer every 7-10 years.

That hasn't happened for over a century.

*Obviously* the big return isn't to audit small-fry wage earners like you and me.

Audit the whales, not the goldfish.

In NZ we gain $8 for every extra $1 spent on Internal zrevenue tax audits.

But our governments cut the funding. Not increase. Cut.

Because the people bring audited are big political party donors. And they don't like being audited.

I wouldn't go that far

The idea is that $1 left in your hands helps the economy more than collecting $1 in tax. That can sometimes be true.

Interestingly it's never true for billionaires so it is an argument for taxing the very rich.(like me) at a higher rate.

Double-masking.

There's a study that says it's slightly more effective. And it makes sense from a physical point of view.

The best before dates are really for the retailers. Wholesalers will no longer guarantee the quality of a product after that date and don't accept returns or offer refunds.

The product is usually still sound.

But people treat best before dates as expiration dates. $Billions of good food thrown out
