I apologize for morphing the discussion that way. I didn't mean to twist your words—300 characters is hard! I wanted to convey that the goal of humans eventually living off earth is not irrational in itself, and you saying it was a “giant red flag”… well, that stung me. But I will let it go now. ☮️

Right now, no, I agree. But the possible benefits of space (moving toxic manufacturing and resource-mining off earth, for ex.) never happen if we don't take the first steps, which is all that SpaceX & some others are *actually* doing. Most of the media
/SM discourse is uninformed nonsense & hype.

OF COURSE we need to fix environmental problems. But it's not either/or. Example: data from Earth observation satellites are vital for climate-change solutions and we wouldn't have them if the “fix earth first” idea had prevailed in the 50s/60s when we were first learning how to launch a rocket.

I respectfully disagree. The dream & goal of permanently expanding human presence to other planets in our solar system (and beyond) is & has been shared by many, many sane & intelligent & compassionate people for a century & more. I don't know if Musk is sane or not, but THAT idea is not a red flag.

Hmmm. Doesn't seem to be an app vs. browser issue, then. If it doesn't fix itself soon I'll submit a bug report, but the site is changing so fast right now it seemed sensible to wait a bit.

Yes, I'm having that problem, too. Are you using the app, or browser version? I'm using browser.

The only one I've read is Lone Women by Victor LaValle, a satisfying dark fantasy that takes a lot of liberties with the historical setting.🙂 Some of the other titles look interesting—I'll be checking them out on Goodreads. Thanks for posting this link!

Caroline Alexander's The Endurance was FANTASTIC! Did not know about In the Heart of the Sea and yes, that's something I want to read—thanks!

Gooley has sooo many “read nature” titles. I chose weather first bc Puget Sound weather is nuts and I'm always trying to understand my microclimate better.🤔

Oh, I loved Kaiju Preservation Society! VERY fun!🦖

They Were Her Property needs to go on my TBR—thank you for bringing it to my attention! I've read Soul by Soul (by Walter Johnson), which is about slave markets and slave/owner dynamics, but it had only a few pages about women slave buyers/owners.

It's well written! I've read a ton about sailing ships so the details of that are very familiar to me, but I'm not finding Grann's descriptions of it at all dull, and the narrative is unfolding at a good clip.

Meanwhile I have Gooley's The Secret World of Weather waiting for me.. 😍

I LOVED his first novel, The Vanished Birds (that one was science fiction), so I have high expectations for this second book. But I have confidence he can deliver!

I'm determined to finally make time for a couple of fantasy titles I've been wanting to read all year: The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez, and The Iron Princess by Barbara Hambly!

Bruce Chatwin is another author I have wanted to read, but never have (yet). I thought I had In Patagonia on the shelves, but can't find it now. I'm afraid I have a bad habit of buying travel books and then never reading them!

Thank you for reporting back! I have the book myself now, and while I probably won't get to it right away, I really don't want to let it languish on the TBR for too long—it looks much too interesting to miss!
