The Fall Guy (2024)
Gosling & Blunt are at their charming best which really helps to sell the romance element of this film. There's also some impressive stunts which makes this a nice tribute to them. However the villains are almost too cartoonish & the plot device driving them is beyond silly.

Civil War (2024)
Some strong world building & there's a couple of moments that are genuinely riveting, with the Jesse Plemons sequence being the highlight. However, by making our heroes photojournalists, the viewer is left standing on the sidelines taking photos, rather than engaging in the story.

Hundreds of Beavers (2022)
One of the most wonderfully weird movies I've ever seen. It takes a moment to get into the wacky mindset of this film, but once it clicks, the cartoon logic results in some downright hilarious moments & the climax is just downright insane. Buster Keaton would be so proud.

Abigail (2024)
Does it follow a well worn path in the horror genre? Yes, but it does a wonderful job of making Abigail's victims into engaging fodder, with Pete the goon being a personal favourite. Plus, Abigail herself is fantastic. Equal parts terrifying & comical, Alisha Weir is a revelation.

The First Omen (2024)
Drawing from the same well as Rosemary's Baby, this prequel manages to deliver a solid sense of impending dread, as it builds toward Damien's arrival. It does suffer a bit from the fact that we know where it's all heading, but there's a nice unexpected development at the end.

Late Night With the Devil (2023)
The Larry Sanders Show meets the Blair Witch Project. However, unlike Blair Witch this one brilliantly explains why they would keep filming, when it all goes to hell. Absolutely fantastic & wildly entertaining recreation of a 1970s talk show. Near perfect horror.

Ghostbusters Frozen Empire (2024)
Everyone who ever touched a proton pack is in this movie (well almost everyone). However, for a movie overstuffed with characters & fan service, the plot is rather thin. There's fun to be had & a couple nice action sequences, but at it's core it felt a bit empty.

Exhuma (2024)
Forget Ghostbusters. This is the foursome battling ghosts that one should see. It's a bit of a slow build & there's quite a bit of info dumping in the back half, but it's a very entertaining ghost story, with a great cast. Plus, several quality jump scares & gore for the horror fans.

YOLO (2024)
The physical transformation Ling Jia undergoes in this film is notable, but the reason to see this film is the character arc. It's Rocky if wallflower Adrian is the person fighting in the ring at the end. Plus, that sequence where it looks like she's delivered a knockout punch. Perfect.

Drive-Away Dolls (2024)
Fun dialogue and a very cute "what's inside the case" reveal is almost enough to make me recommend this film. However, the simple fact of the matter is there's a barebones plot at the center of this film and even if it's only half a Coen Brothers' film, I expect more.

Land of Bad (2024)
Not the most original of stories & it feels like it's following a check list of action beats. However, Russell Crowe practically carries this movie on his back while spending most of it sitting in a chair. Plus, the climax, complete with a ticking clock, is genuine nailbitter.

Lisa Frankenstein (2024)
An utterly faithful recreation of the 80s teen romance genre. Sure our hero goes down the homicidal path rather abruptly, but this is nicely in keeping with the films it's emulating. Plus, the humor is spot on & the relationship between the sisters is surprisingly moving.

American Fiction (2023)
A brilliant satire that's probably closer to the truth than we'd like to admit. Solid performances, with clever, often hilarious dialogue. Most importantly though the sibling relationships felt genuine, which gave a particular unexpected moment an extra gut punch.

The Beekeeper (2024)
John Prine's Hello In There meets John Wick. Yes, it's incredibly silly, with it's bee puns & over the top action. However, I love the simplicity of it's premise & how high up the mountain the path of revenge goes. I know I shouldn't, but I loved this delightful bit of trash.

Poor Things (2023)
Emmanuelle meets Young Frankenstein. Emma Stone is brilliant as a woman who's brought back from the dead with the brain of her unborn infant implanted in her head. It's just as bizarre as it sounds but it works amazingly well. Mark Ruffalo is also hilarious as a sleazy cad.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023)
A perfectly serviceable comic book movie, with Jason Momoa's goofy charm making the most of a host of rather lame jokes. The underwater kingdoms are nicely realized & we do get one great Aquaman moment with his countermeasure to the sonic cannon.

Wonka (2023)
Like the Paddington films, this is a great big warm hug of a movie. It breezes along with a charm that makes it hard not to like this film and everyone in the cast looks like they're having a great time. Sure the songs are a bit forgettable, but Hugh Grant's dance was delightful.

A more surreal Alice in Wonderland, as Hayao Miyazaki delivers a brilliantly animated journey full of visual images that left me delighted. Yes, I know this sounds a bit hyperbolic, but I had a great time with this film. With Godzilla Minus One, Japan's batting 1000.

Dream Scenario (2023)
A hilarious character study, with Nicolas Cage as a man who desperately wants to be acknowledged but is woefully unprepared when fame does arrives. The highlight is his disastrous attempted apology. Only Nicolas Cage could pull off such a masterful display of whinging.

Godzilla Minus One (2023)
Not only the best big monster movie I’ve ever seen, but it should be used as the template for all the rest that follow. Godzilla puts on a great show as he smashes his way across post war Japan and the human characters are genuinely compelling. Plus, a fantastic climax.
