If it can hurt regular people and benefit the top 5% the Republicans can’t wait to support it.

I don’t think this is new, but it’s nice to see people paying attention to the abuses the “free market” and “no regulation” corporations commit when they see opportunity.

I agree that’s part of it, but broad cultural strokes that homogenize everyone maybe over-simplified. I agree a lot of the problem may lie in Capitalism ( see “The Price is Wrong”, by Brett Christophers). Which has little to do with free markets, and now seems more a defense for extremes & abuse.

Good point. I’ve often had it something like this suggested to me; that the, “Leftists, immigrants & Commies are coming to take our freedom and way of life”. It sounds absurd, but if you believe it, than you would definitely feel threatened and want a strongman with strong fight the threat values.

I don’t disagree with the role of poverty as a strong contributor to alienation, but much of Trump’s support is far from poor. It seems to me though that there is more to it, e.g., the tendency of the Right to see Property Rights as equivalent - even superior - to Human Rights.

You are 100% correct, of course. I hope soon after we can take our focus off the individual and begin to work on the conditions & beliefs causing 70+million people to vote for - literally choose - what he represents. I feel that is the real problem.

That seems to be the reasoning on the Right in both the US and Canada. If you bail out a bank, it’s sound Capitalist economics. Bail out a worker and it’s welfare and Socialism.

I’ve never been a fan of education being under the control of various pockets of parochial sensibility. I think the dangers inherent in decentralized control of education were demonstrated by the need for school desegregation in the US South & desire of the Far Right to control what is taught.

And Toyota recently issued a recall on its cars from the years 2003 & 2004 which can kill a passenger with small metal projectiles if the airbag deploys. Do we actually think thy didn’t know about this “feature” until the cars were 20 years old and no longer an issue for image & profitability?

I think the real story is the poor turnout. 14% of those eligible. I know it was frigid cold but I went out in minus 39 because we were out of milk and my daughter wanted hot chocolate. Seems to me Republicans could have cared at least as much & gone out to cast a vote if they really supported him.

14% total voter turn out - so he gets a little over 7% of the Country’s electorate backing him. The other 7% backed different Republicans. Trump will call it a landslide. It’s more of a fart in the wind.

Because it has gained traction with a large segment of the electorate. Because it appears to further his claims that the anti democratic forces are in charge and intensifies cynicism over politics. Also probably the only tactic that could keep him out of jail if it works.
