Game of Thrones: Inspired/Influenced by European history but created by American author (GRRM) and American screenwriter (David Benioff).

iPhones - MADE in China, but invented in America by American Steve Jobs.

Blockbuster movies: made in America by Americans

USA! USA!! USA!!! 😂

I'm thinking more about media, culture and entertainment... not traditional "exports" / goods. I certainly wouldn't praise petroleum products or military hardware etc.

The US has great brands, particularly in technology, media, and entertainment.
iPhones, Google products, movies...
I feel like you are setting a trap for me... 😳

thread 2 Threaded Spouts
Not that these are the most cogent reasons, but it's good to see an article praise a decision to leave something out of the books in the interest of making the Game of Thrones series better.

Sorry about that! The United States has some great exports, but illiteracy is not one of them!

Correct: Jonathan became reticent when Joanna asked him about Santorini.
Wrong: Jonathan was reticent to tell Joanna what happened in Santorini.

ha ha... just saw this...
oh it gets worse... there's a problematic trend here of misusing words so often that the word ends up getting redefined based on the misuse rather than it's actual definition. "reticent" is a good example. In the US, people use it wrongly to mean "reluctant".

Thanks for this history. I'm not familiar with these specifics but know 50s/60s/70s era CIA and Kissinger supported coups to install dictatorships worldwide. I'm sorry your country was a victim of this. I'll have to learn more about Cypress.

Thanks for sharing this with me! Nice work... this is great... especially so since you wrote it all. I hope the hotels listed compensate you for bookings. (I'm in internet advertising so that's how I think.) I employ a few web designers but it's mostly boring WP stuff for small businesses.

Web development is your primary work? Do you freelance or work for a firm? Do you build with Wordpress or another platform?

You can be nosey-- we've known each other for several weeks now! And no, I didn't know the island's official name was Thira, nor why!! I think I'm going to start calling it Thira. I love this background... keep it coming! Do you write, or teach, or are otherwise involved in academics?

was also thinking about a key theme: suffering and transformation... Arya and Sansa were now different people as the result of suffering, so I was more thinking in terms of what they had experienced and so conflict seemed natural to me... but I'll give it more thought.

Thanks for the entomology! I love this. For some reason in the US this term is often cited as "xenia", but we always bastardize things here in America. I'm going to send this to the teacher that took me through the Iliad/Odyssey & to my mom (Greek-lover/student and former teacher). Thanks for this!

This is Part 1. There is a 2nd piece featuring quotes-- and a still unwritten Part 3 which will compare the endings of The Odyssey and Game of Thrones which have some interesting parallels.

Which is why when people complain that Weiss & Benioff ended the show too soon when GRRM wanted 13 seasons, I easily side with Weiss & Benioff. Given his history, would you trust GRRM to deliver the material for 13 seasons? (GOT ended while popular-- 13 seasons would have caused fatigue.)

Even years ago when I was reading the books as the show progressed, I thought "gosh this guy needs an editor". But I think he wants to indulge every thought he has & add more characters & more places & more lore. It's a talent but also a curse & certainly not a way to tell an overarching story.

Yes, i alternate between posting "every winds of winter update" and articles about "every project GRRM is working on BESIDES winds of winter". Like any prolific writer especially when working on multiple projects, he needs help but I don't think his "big ego" (his words) will allow that.

Hey! Sorry for the delay. I got caught up with the holiday and then some work stuff, but I'm enthusiastic about corresponding with a true Game of Thrones fan who appreciates the show the way I do. Your question about Sansa is interesting, but I don't have an answer.

“One may wonder why Israel would kidnap a poet. The answer, though painful, is simple. In its genocidal war against Palestinians, Israel seeks to erase not only Palestinian lives but also their culture and heritage.”

We would probably need 50 spouts each to make our cases here. But suffice to say I could make a circumstantial case that Tywin was involved in the assassination, helped prosecute Tyrion as a patsy, and quickly assumed power with Tommen. But I like that plot lines are not always fully explained.

GRRM's writing style is like Herodotus... lots of distractions into extensive description of rooms, people, food, etc. It's world building but not really story telling. It's like an open world RPG rather than a story based RPG. Weiss & Benioff told the story & they deserve an abundance of praise.

And that's why the book series will never be finished (which doesn't bother me). GRRM does too much meandering, he's undisciplined, AND he is working on many other projects. None of this bothers me-- creators don't owe us and he should live his best life. But he really needed D&D to tell his story.

Tolkien is in a class of his own. He clearly influenced GRRM as did some classic that I have been reading to understand their impact on GOT (both GRRM and D&D). That includes Homer's Odyssey (which I wrote a GOT article about), Herodotus, and The Iliad which I'm reading now (article forthcoming).

Agreed- I told people when I started reading that "it's not great literature". He tells some good stories and lots of meandering. He says he's a "gardener", not an "architect". I think he started as an architect (with the under-appreciated scene of the direwolf pups) but got lost in later books.

I'm grateful for the world that GRRM imagined & to D&D for creating the best show ever made. BUT consider Tolkien built a world to tell a story. GRRM built a world to tell a story but then got so lost in the world that he became unable to tell the core story (the tragedy of Jon and Daenerys).

I read the books AFTER viewing. I read the first book after S1, 2nd book after S2 etc. The differences are interesting and make me appreciate D&D's choices (which GRRM praised early on). Shhhh--- don't tell anyone I said this but the books are over-rated!! 😬
