One good habit I learned after I moved south, which I learned quickly in the principal's office when my son was in kindergarten, was to say "Please ma'am "(or sir) and "Thank you ma'am" (or sir)" , generally just to use ma'am and sir a lot when speaking to people, especially on the phone.

Absolutely. I saw the shift when I was in grad school at Wharton. Reagan had just been elected and the economics debate of the day was about supply-side economics and all that trickle-down voo-do. We knew it was bullshit, but corporate America and MSM went all-in on tax breaks and deregulation.
