The museum website: ‘… the Black woman… is anonymous yet decidedly present, addressing the viewer directly and filling the frame. Fairly large for a single portrait image, the frame measures roughly 22 by 18 inches, and Catlett uses the entire surface to realize the image. The face, hair, and shoulders, which emerge from an indeterminate background, are executed in a series of maneuvers rendering light and dark areas, coalescing in a truly monumental portrait. The viewer can see the attention paid to materiality and process—a hallmark of Catlett’s practice.‘

The modulated shades of gray, stylized forms, and psychological gravity exemplify her deep commitment to aesthetic principles. The shaded, direct gaze conveys a commanding and confident presence, an attitude more typically associated with her male counterparts. The riding hat and coat and masculine tailoring recall conventions of aristocratic portraiture while also evoking a chic androgyny associated with the post--World War I "new woman." Brooks's fashion choices also enabled upper-class lesbians to identify and acknowledge one another.”

On October 8, 1967, Hello Dolly opened at the National Theatre starring Pearl Bailey, produced by David Merrick and co-starring Cab Calloway and an all-black cast. It became so successful that it was later produced as a Broadway show, where it played to sold-out houses, and Ms. Bailey winning a Tony Award for her title role.“

I was a lowly bank teller near UW in the early 80’s. Proffesser Lawrence would always come in so humbly ID in hand to do his banking. I was in awe. One of the greatest artists our nation has produced.

Titus Kaphar is a fantastic contemporary artist.

Titus Kaphar took a painting that used to be on the wall of Yale Corporation's room, showing Elihu Yale and two other wealthy white men, with an enslaved Black child in the background, and repainted it, crumpling it up and highlighting one part. It's called "Enough About You".

Here is another Titus Kaphar painting from the Cleveland Museum of Art magazine. Kaphar added rusted nails to his canvas & covered George Washington's face & body with this tea-stained shroud inscribed with the names of the more than 300 people he enslaved.

George washington sits on a white horse but he can barely be seen covered by this golden shroud.

One of my favorite painters, so I was delighted to find out that he lived for many years in a red brownstone a few blocks from our apartment - it's marked by a plaque. Lincoln Kirstein, too - just a few houses away.
