I was writing too! Reading and writing reviews of other people's grant proposals. Writing days can be thought provoking and peaceful. 💻️

Oh no! I specifically use phenylephrin-based meds for colds; they work well for me with less side effects than pseudoephedrine. Hard to believe that it could be placebo effect. They cite metabolism as preventing the drugs from reaching the blood, but couldn't that vary between patients?

What a cool photo! Is this photo a piece of digital art, or is this a real sculpture somewhere?

That's interesting. If this happens again anytime soon I may need to go get it checked out, for peace of mind. Thanks.

Part of it is having a pre-existing community to join though. Since Spoutible's pilot population was heavy in journalists (I believe), now there is a thriving community there. We need to get enough sciencey people over here and talking, sometimes into a seeming void, to make it easy for others to j

Thank you! That sounds like a fascinating novel. I nearly did a AAAS fellowship years ago... ended up as a professor instead, but I still am super interested in science policy and communication, especially around vaccination. Nice to meet you!

Here is a great post on what this means in terms of # of attempts needed for likely funding. "Suppose a per-application success rate of 17.7%. ... 15 applications are required to get to a 95% cumulative probability of at least one being awarded." https://drugmonkey.wordpre...

I love that you are so supportive. Looking at NIH "paylines", which are percentiles above which most grants are funded, most institutes fund roughly the top 10-15% each round. Some a little higher or lower. This is still tough, though not as bad as 1%.

Yes, good point about the long term cloud storage! Especially for high content imaging... where can we store terabytes of images per paper? It would be good for universities to start building up capacity for this.

Thank you! I know in theory that it's just house decor, and trivial in the big picture... but wow the disappointment factor is high when so much planning goes awry. Thanks for your kind note, it makes me feel a little better!
