Since there's little room in the bio:
1. I'm an ecology/botany professor, late mid career
2. At a largely underfunded public regional
3. I enjoy hiking but don't get to enough
4. I knit, quilt, crochet, but not as much as I once did
5. I am too busy, and I think the pandemic took something from

yeah I'm still here. there's too many social media places where my friends have diasporaed themselves to so I guess I have to rotate my way through four or five locations just to see people

I hate all this. I wish all my friends were nearby so I could see them in person and,

Once again I am thinking about how my department decided we had to turn down the boxes of cookies, donuts, etc. that texbook reps offered because we were state employees and that might look like graft.

And yet, people far more powerful than us accept much larger gifts and insist it's fine.

this stuff grows wild in my yard (OK). I don't spray or anything, I just cut it down/pull it out before it sets fruit so I don't get overrun

OFC he's getting special treatment where the booking process is easier than it would be for, say, some random unknown white 70-something guy

Can you IMAGINE, though, the vitriol that would be spewed from some quarters today about this good and gentle man?

In light of the indictments, I find myself once again remembering how I sat with absolute horror on January 6, 2021, watching what was happening on tv/the internet. Remember we were still in the middle of a deadly pandemic and I'd not left the house much for 10 months

Horrible thought, but: I would be less disgusted by the "document keeping" if he had been ideologically motivated, like, if he thought he could cause some kind of change in how the US did things by sharing info. But apparently it was all "look at me I'm a big man who has state secrets."

But when you're alone as much as I am in the summers (academic on a small campus where there are few in person summer classes and no one is around), things like that loom large.

somewhere else I hang out there's one person in the group. If I say "b**** eating crackers" some of you will know what I mean. But anyway, once again they said something that rubbed me the wrong way and makes me think "oh they think I'm stupid" and I just am not engaging with it

you're really old when your doctor says you shouldn't take ibuprofen any more (because of some chronic issues) and to use tylenol instead, so you have bathroom tylenol and with-your-regular-med-bottles tylenol, and office tylenol...

this is true but I would prefer to have better ventilation than to have to just wear a mask 24/7 in the bad-air future.

Reminder: The tools that protect us from #COVID — masks, air filters, and structural policies like expanded healthcare access — are the tools that we need to protect us from the #climate crisis, which is causing a decrease in air quality and increase of disease outbreaks.

I've also really, really lost my ability to make new friends since 2020, and at the same time I am increasingly misanthropic given how I saw some people treat their "neighbors" these past few years

And yet: I am lonesome. I miss people.

what do you do when a system you've been part of your entire life, and value, has a large number of people who are.... not really abiding by what you were taught were its tenets?

the fact that some men find rape a fit subject to joke about just reminds me to be VERY careful and suspicious around men I don't know extremely well. And probably to be careful around the ones I know well, for that matter, given some of the cases of abuse i've heard

Just having a real sad day today, folks. There are too many terrible people in the world who see their fellow humans as "NPCs" and apparently have no compunction against harming them.

I'm legitimately afraid to go to the grocery store now, let alone shop at a mall :'(

I also have BAD memories of that task and bad associations because it was dropped in my lap (by someone departing for a better-paid, lower-work job) just a couple weeks after my dad died, when I was in deep grief, and they gave me NO help getting started. (I will help my colleague figure it out)

well, one good thing that happened today: I had a service task (I am a college prof) that I HATED and felt like it brought me little value. My chair today asked me if I was "okay with" passing that task to a colleague in need of doing more service...

seeing 'lifestyle news' stories on "the return of mending" and for some of us? It never left.

of course now it's a save-the-earth thing rather than a "frugal" thing.
