OTD 07.07.1951 "Rocket 88" became no.1 on the R&B charts. Music historians often cite it as the "first #rocknroll record." #IkeTurner wrote Rocket, though the song credits his sax player/lead singer Jackie Brenston and his Delta Cats, and it was recorded at #SamPhillips #SunRecords .

We've accomplished a lot since launching last June (Black Music Month) 2022. But given the state of America and the world today, there's much more to do. Black music history is the story of America. #BlackHistoryMonth

I just came back from a great trip to NYC. I spent some time at the NYPL looking at the manuscripts of Charles Griffes, a 20th-century American composer from NY. He died as a result from the 1918 pandemic (from one of the subsequent waves).
I enjoyed this snippet where he extended the barlines🤣

Though the last president tried to shamelessly (his default setting?) try and claim he was the first to designate an "African-American Music Appreciation Month," that was not true. President Jimmy Carter established Black Music Month in 1979. #ThankYouJimmy #BlackHistoryMonth #blackmusicproject
Black Music Project @blackmusicprojectPres. Jimmy Carter 1st designated June as Black Music Month in the US in 1979 after an initiative led by iconic producer Kenny Gamble developed the idea. When it comes to “hidden figures” in Black history, few have a legacy as instantly recognizable as Esther Jones. A largely Harlem-based jazz singer known as “Baby Esther” in the early 1900s, Jones became the inspiration for the character of Betty Boop but never received a penny in compensation. #bl

We gave a Jeopardy style hint by asking, "Can you name this 'ENTERTAINER'?" Scott Joplin was right when he predicted that his work would be appreciated more 25 years after his death than in his own time. #BlackHistoryMonth #ragtime
