Republicans are arguing that Trump had a 1A right to lie about the election.

Sure, but that ended when the violence caused by it began.

1A doesn’t protect you when your words incite imminent lawless action.

Once again, Republicans don’t understand how the Constitution they claim to defend works.

Since when does the 1A protect against lying by the President and if it does we need to re-think our interpretation of this amendment.

First amendment protects citizens from government constraint of speech. It does not authorize unconstrained speech from government. It's important to remember Trump's role at the time he was promulgating lies. He was government.

They are correct. Trump had (and still has) a right to lie about anything. That does not mean he is allowed to break laws to attempt to overturn the election. He can lie all he wants to, that's not what he has been charged with.

So Everyone has a first Amendment right to lie to get what they want like fraudsters, conmen, cheating spouses...sounds like a GOP wish-list of activities.

The collaborative intentional lying to the American public by the GOP in regards to our elections will be a bigger story in the eyes of history. Those that defended him violated their oath and are every bit, if not more guilty than Trump himself.

Multiple counts of Conspiracy.

1A doesn’t protect speech that is a component in the furtherance of a conspiracy.

For Republicans, it's the law doesn't apply to them, but marginalized communities. They know how the Constitution works, which is why they want to get rid of it.

And had Trump stopped at just the lies, we would not be here. It was the fact he conspired to overturn an election based on those lies.

And FYI, REPUBLICANS: If you think you can gain and keep power just through lies, you should rethink your political platform.

If republicons were capable of rethinking their political platform, they'd no longer be republicons.

Trump did indeed have a right to challenge the election—which he did, and lost. He also had a first-amendment right to lie about the election.
What he did not have was a right to use “unlawful means of discounting legitimate votes and subverting the election results.” - Heather Cox Richardson 🎯

The first amendment protects your right to say things, not to be free of the consequences of having said them. The government is not prosecuting him for lying. They are prosecuting his attempts to undermine the peaceful transfer of power and stochastic terrorism.

So, republicans defend lies and deception as normal political activity, and ban the teaching of history of violence and genocide, because it is truth. Good reason to vote them out.
