This is an honest question, not meant to rag on anyone: why do people like loud engines? I really don't understand it.

I've always operated on the theory that they want everyone to know that they're there. Kind of sad, really.

Is it a safety issue? Or is the loud noise enjoyable?

I could geek out and get very technical as I spent the better part of my 20's building and racing cars.

So being a child of the 06/70's and a hot rodder at heart the horse power/thermo dynamics of the internal combustion engine are such that the exhaust/mufflers become the choke point and rob a lot of power. This does not apply to Trucks Hondas etc. they are just assholes. They have little HP to start

I wonder the same thing about fireworks. I live in a wilderness area and as I watch my dog tremble at the big booms, I can’t help but wonder what it’s doing to the wildlife. And to think the “booms” are added for effect! I would enjoy fireworks more without the sounds. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes! They would be so much better without the loud noise.

Don’t enjoy noisy engines myself, but I will point out that in the case of motorcycles, “loud pipes save lives” (maybe you’ve seen the bumper sticker?)—the loudness can help other motorists notice the cycle in their midst and avoid accidents.

I consider it a threat of violence, at least on trucks that are purposely modified to be loud.

I kind of agree. It feels like an assertion of dominance that's a bit scary.

😂😂 I truly don’t get the personal pleasure they receive from it. I do understand their pleasure maybe of annoying. But that’s a guess. But they may not understand my love for Yo Yo Ma. .

You're right about knowing they're annoying – there's no way they're oblivious to that. It's like, "Look at me! I'm loud!"

Because it's the only "real" argument you can make against EVs, which are faster, safer, cheaper to fuel and maintain and are green.

Ha, one of my students literally said this the other day. He was talking about dirt bikes & I asked him if he'd tried out electric ones; he said no way, they were awful. I said I'd heard they were fast and powerful, but he said that didn't matter; they didn't make any noise, and were therefore junk.

I'm not a fan myself, but I would guess it has something to do with being in control of something powerful and dangerous.

Kind of like how nearly all toddlers get into dinosaurs for a while.

That tracks. My new neighbors and their friends, in their early 20s, all have obnoxiously loud trucks. And as far as your "emotionally" part, so does one of their dads who I grew up with...not the most mature dude I know.

I would like to please direct this question at the jerk in a Porsche who idled his outside the neighbor's house for a good 20 minutes last night.
