No.
I cannot find it within myself to ever have compassion for anyone who harms a child. I cannot find compassion for those who torture animals. I have no compassion for rapists. I have no compassion for serial murderers.

Exactly my sentiment. I couldn't have put together a better list for myself than you have here!

I can’t help feeling compassion in most cases. I don’t plan on it but I will keep thinking and inevitably arrive there.
This does not mean that I think people should avoid accountability. Quite the contrary.

Yes. We need to separate compassion from accountability. I can feel compassion for someone but that doesn't mean I forgive them or that they don't deserve punishment for crimes. That's a question of justice, not compassion, imo.

Interesting question. Gonna say no, not everyone. People who traffic children, unrepentant killers or rapists, etc, not from me.

Almost everyone... but I agree that it's extremely difficult when people are causing harm to others.

Important note: self-compassion is crucial & can improve well-being. If you're looking to practice that, self-compassion.org has a lot of free info/activities - Dr. Kristin Neff is the best!

I think yes, but with the caveat that they are not actively harming others. If they have harmed others but have genuinely atoned, then compassion is fine.

Which means no, because at any given time, a lot of people are hurting others.

Yes...but not at the expense of the welfare of the greater community.
Also, are we talking wilful perpetration of hurtful acts or a need for compassion due to natural disasters, etc.? For the former, compassion is different from forgiveness...

There's also a place here to mention repentance (remorse, sincere regret, an intention to not repeat harm). Obvs, the more remorse indicated, the more we are inclined towards compassion.
But when people suffer through no fault of their own, compassion for their suffering defines our best instincts.

I think everyone who is capable of compassion deserves compassion.

I just can't see myself offering it to narcissists and sociopaths. (I'm thinking politicians.)

Yes. And not just humans!
But non-abusive people *must* be protected from abusive people, even while the abusers are dealt with compassionately.

Yes. Compassion isn’t a get out of jail free card. Compassion seeks to understand human failure. In so doing it helps inform how to change the path of the vulnerable. No one is an island. We all have family.
