Is making half your normal salary for teaching the same class better than not working at all?

Maybe if it gives you income or benefits you wouldn't have while you look for another job?

Certainly income, although not very much, comparatively...

Ouch. There's no good answer here. You'll have to figure out which way benefits you more, but... it's an unfair choice you shouldn't have to make, because really, you lose either way. The administration sucks for having a separate pay tier for online classes.

They really do! My only recourse would be to file a grievance...but that's not fair because the people who teach online only have more experience than me doing that, so I shouldn't cry because I make the same as them....

My philosophy? Teach people how you want to be treated. If you're being taken advantage of, no matter the circumstances...money/wasting your valuable time/sucks the joy out of your day.....do a cost/benefit analysis, and decide from there.

Adjunct pay is designed for those who want to teach and just need a little extra money since they already have other jobs - it’s exploitive- same work for way less than TT faculty- why the two-tiered system?

No, I don't think so. Because even if I say people have to eat, how much are they providing for themselves with half rhe salary?

I think you're right. If this is the only class available to me, maybe it's time to switch to something completely different...

Nope. Those are just two sides of the same cow patty.

Sure, one side might come with money, but at what cost to your sense of self-worth and the perceived value of your labor?

Not if one has (or can create) a better choice.

I was offered a similar option.
I chose to retire early.

Fuck that shit.

Oh goodness, that's such a hard question. I taught art classes at night while working a full-time librarian job, and the stipend was atrocious, but I was over budget because of needing an apartment to avoid a 4 hour total commute, and that little bit of extra money kept me from going into debt.

Yeah, and that's the life of an adjunct overall... I think the idea was initially for people like you that were doing it as an extra job, but there are so many of us who have it as our main income. So even my regular salary is bad...but now I'm asked to teach an online class that pays a ton less.

Sure isn't. The only difference is that I'll be teaching online, which has a different (and apparently much worse) bargaining unit.
