Any one thing – from needing a new vehicle to a health issue to a natural disaster to a layoff – can make so many of us go from feeling financially secure to struggling in an instant.

I was caught in a 200 person layoff last April and it's been terrifying ever since. When we don't have basic needs met, we can be just a few paychecks away from disaster.

Yup, poverty is closer than you think. The decent stripping away luxuries that people feel are necessities is pretty scary and can overwhelm. People living on disability/social security have little hope of ever escaping again.

Tell me about it! My share of the battery of medical tests this month is a whopping $1200, after insurance! Just messaged the hospital to set up a payment plan. I don't want to plunk that on a credit card with interest.

Can confirm. Soon after my wife and I were married, my oldest stepson was diagnosed with schizophrenia. She had to quit her job, insurance covered next to nothing. Chapter 13, huge monthly payments, continuing psych bills crippled us for years. In fact, after 25 years we’ve never entirely recovered.

Natural disasters are no joke either, because they're getting worse. My house flooded in a hurricane for the 1st time ever, so I had to replace all my furniture, plus all the misc things that add up $$$.

This was me in grad school. Department rules forbid us from getting jobs so I was getting by on stipend, student loans, and credit cards. Had $7000 in vet bills my last year in grad school. Once had stove and furnace go out in same week (CO poisoning danger). $$$ dental work. Etc.

Let us not forget the transmission problem that cost me more than a month's stipend.

A new vehicle isn’t cheap whether it’s new new or new to you.

And when you have no say in the timeline, 😬

I'm in a better place now but once my car had a slow oil leak/burn that was not detected and the engine seized up in the middle of an intersection. Had to sell it for $200 to a junk car guy. Was in my 30s but my parents had to help get me a car from another state because that's all I could do.

My boiler just burst a hole in it, and needs to be replaced. The cost to replace is astronomical. I don't have that kind of money saved. I feel awful for anyone going through even worse, at this time of year. I'm grateful to still have a roof over my head.

Tell me about it! I have to move by the end of January, and wherever I go might as well be named Struggletown, USA, because that’s where I’m gonna be for the foreseeable future. Rent in ATL just keeps going up. 😩
