Did you learn in school how Black activists during WWII went to the West Coast to protect Japanese Americans and their property when the U.S. government put them in interment camps and their biggest advocate was a gay Black man? I didn’t think so.

I did not know. Fascinating. I did know you were referencing Bayard Ruskin. Brilliant guy, his treatment by all parties was shameful. CORE's advocacy of equality in military+industrial contracting is pretty well covered in many history books, but their protecting Japanese Americans, nope. New info.

Bayard Ruskin doesn’t get near the recognition that he deserves. I truly feel that was because he was a gay man during a time it was illegal and the homophobia that ran through the different communities.

Did I know that black folks have been alongside many movements for social justice in this country? Yes.

That’s like asking if I knew Yuri Kochiyama was with Malcom X when he was murdered.

Sometimes it seems like black kids had to learn an extra history lesson alongside your adult fun facts.

I knew at least some of that, but I didn't learn it in school - I learned it from following George Takei on social media. His family was interned, and he talked about it over on the dead bird site, and in interviews.

I think the Netflix film abt Baynard left that part out & that he was a Conscientious Objector. Many COs of that time were makin good trouble even when they were imprisoned for being so.
